An obese patient looking for weight loss is not an ideal candidate for liposuction. Essentially, liposuction is best suited for people who are within the healthy BMI range but have certain problem areas like the abdomen, arms, or thighs not responding to diet and exercise.
A period of 3 -4 days is required before one can resume working. A compression garment is to be worn during a period of at least 6 weeks post the procedure. This helps in tightening the skin and creating a better definition of a post surgery. Patients should abstain from smoking and alcohol after surgery to hasten to heal. A period of 6 weeks is recommended before resuming weight training and other strenuous activities.
In the case of liposuction, there are certain factors which a patient must understand before opting for the surgery such as:
- Liposuction is a body contouring procedure and not a weight loss procedure. As the fat is removed there will be some reduction in weight but the main aim of this surgery is to provide better shape/contouring to a specific body part. Hence, the success of the surgery must not be measured through the amount of weight lost.
- The amount of fat to be removed from a particular area depends on various factors including the surgeon's assessment of the patient's health and the realistic goals of the patient associated with the surgery.
- The longevity of the results is entirely dependant on how a person leads their life post liposuction. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle (a balanced diet and regular exercise) can help in maintaining the results of liposuction lifelong.
Both of these surgeries are performed for different purposes. If we talk about abdominal fat, liposuction alone will be enough if the person has good skin elasticity. On the other hand, if a person has accumulated abdominal fat and has a hanging tummy a surgeon will recommend tummy tuck surgery. So, in a tummy tuck surgery the plastic surgeons remove fat, excess skin and also tighten the abdominal muscles if required. Most women required tummy tuck surgery after childbirth.
